In 2011, 9-year-old Milo Cress noticed that restaurants were automatically adding straws to drinks. These straws would end up unused, and eventually in landfills. With over 500 million straws used each day, young environmentalist Milo Cress founded his “Be Straw Free” campaign to reduce waste. With the help of Milo’s “Be Straw Free” campaign, July 11th is officially proclaimed as “Straw Free Day” in the state of Colorado. His project has also attracted the attention of The National Restaurant Association and restaurants across Vermont, Colorado, Illinois, and Maine.
