The Bottle Boat Initiative (BBI) began in 2011 when 15-year-old Earth Saver Prashanth Ramakrishna created the first ever growth projection model for the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The model showed that the patch would double in size by 2020 if consumerism remained the same. Prashanth gathered a group of friends and built a sailable catamaran out of entirely recyclable materials. The boat sailed down the Detroit River with coverage by Fox News, the Detroit Times and others. The Bottle Boat Initiative was named the poster project for Earth Day’s Billion Acts of Green Initiative. Prashanth was later named Michigan’s Young Green Leader of the Year.
