The 2019 Empowered Young Environmentalists Summit was a great success! Multiple schools from across the region came to central NYC to learn about how they could make a real impact in their communities. Youth were able to talk with a multitude of environmental organizations and learn what it really means to be an effective environmentalist through a series of engaging workshops, important discussions, and fun activities. They also learned about a variety of environmental problems and how groups are actively working to fix them, and got hands-on experience working with those solutions during our workshop periods. A number of fun icebreakers gave students the opportunity to develop their leadership, get to know one another, and develop critical teamworking skills during break periods. Students were also able to sit in on talks by beekeeper Jade Sweeney and young activist Ananya Singh. Overall, a lot of great memories were made at EYES 2019, and we are already looking forward to planning next year’s youth summit! Thank you to our wonderful sponsors who made this event happen: Urban Assembly School for Green Careers, HI NYC, the NYC Department of Education: Sustainability Initiative, and the Greening Forward Board of Advisors.
